With the release of the final rule, independent laboratory pathologists are now included in CMS’s Quality Payment Program. With a January 1, 2017, effective date, it will be important for organizations to implement a plan on how to participate in the program in order to avoid a negative payment adjustment in 2019. Pathologist participating in the program have several options for reporting their 2017 data under MIPS and AAPM. Although the 2017 reporting timeline was revised to be more flexible, there is still limited time for preparation. Independent laboratory pathologists and physician billers will need to work quickly to select applicable measures as the revenue cycle management impact of MACRA continues to expand.
